What we collect, and why.

Nell & Key gives your child one short math mission a day, built from the things they love. A parent sets up and controls the account. This page explains, plainly, what that requires, who else ever sees it, and how to have it deleted. If any part here is unclear, email us and ask. We would rather explain it than have you guess.
The short version
A parent creates the account. Your child does not sign in and has no email with us. We collect the small profile you type in (your child's first name, grade, and a couple of interests), the math your child works through in each mission, and the chapters those missions become. Your child's answers are checked by our own math engine; the everyday mission does not use AI. We never sell your data, we run no advertising, and we place no tracking on you or your child. You can ask us to delete your family's data at any time.
Who runs the account
Nell & Key is made for children in grades 2 to 5, but the account belongs to a parent or guardian. You sign in with an email and password, or with Google, through Google Firebase. Your child has no separate login, no password, and no email address with us. You type in a short profile so the first mission can be built around your child, and you can read every chapter your child makes.
What we collect

Your child's words and voice
In the everyday daily mission, what your child types, or the words a spoken answer is turned into, is checked by our own math engine in the browser. Only the result of the math is saved, to build the chapter.
Talking to Sam is optional. The microphone is off until your child turns it on, and it is active only while your child holds the button, never in the background. There is always a text box instead. We do not store any recording of your child's voice. Turning speech into text is done by your browser's own speech recognition, which, depending on the browser, may process the audio through the browser maker's recognition service. Sam's own voice is a set of recordings we made ahead of time and ship with the site.
AI, disclosed plainly
The everyday daily mission does not use OpenAI or any other AI service. Your child's answers are checked by our own math engine.
One optional feature is different: an open-ended “ask” that writes a reply back in words. It is not part of the daily mission, and it works only when that feature is switched on. When it is used, the specific short piece of text your child typed is sent to OpenAI to generate the reply, and nothing else, no account details and no profile. OpenAI processes that text to answer and does not use it to train its models under our agreement. When the feature is not switched on, nothing is sent.
Who else sees your data
We use a small number of providers to run Nell & Key. Each sees only what it needs:
- Google Firebase: sign-in, and where your account and your child's chapters are stored.
- OpenAI: only when the optional “ask” feature above is switched on and used, and only the short text sent for that one reply.
- Resend: if you write to us or ask for the pilot, this email service delivers your message to our team.
- Google Fonts: the page loads its typefaces from Google, so Google sees the request your browser makes for them.
- Your browser's speech service: if your child uses the microphone, the browser may turn the audio into text through its maker's recognition service.
We do not sell your data to anyone, for any reason. We run no advertising, we place no analytics or tracking scripts, and we do not share your data with data brokers or ad networks.
Payments
The pilot is free. Ordinary families are never sent to a payment page and never asked for a card to open missions. If we open paid keys later, payment is handled on our payment provider's own page (Stripe); we would never receive your card number, and no part of your child's profile or work is ever sent to a payment provider.
Children
Nell & Key is meant for children, in grades 2 to 5, and we have built it that way on purpose. A parent or guardian creates and controls the account; the child does not sign in, give an email, or set up anything themselves. We collect only the short profile the parent enters and the math the child works through, and we keep both to a minimum. We never use a child's information to advertise to them, we never sell it, and we never build an advertising profile. If you are a parent and want to see, correct, or delete what we have for your child, email us and we will take care of it.
Deleting your data
Email info@nellandkey.com from your account's email address and we will delete your account, your child's profile, and the saved chapters, and confirm once it is done. We keep your child's saved chapters so you can return to them, so they are removed when you ask us, not on their own. You can also download your child's chapters as a PDF from the book at any time; that download is made on your device.
Security
Your data travels over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and who can read it is enforced by rules on our server, not only by the app, so one family's data is not reachable from another's account even if the app were tricked into asking. No system is perfectly secure, but we treat this seriously and keep tightening it.
Changes to this policy
If this changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top, and for anything important we will tell you directly rather than relying on you finding this page again.
