What we collect, and why.

Nell & Key gives your child a short mission a day, built around the things they love: a Spanish garden, a little light they program, a skateboard taken apart, a website of their own. The maths lives inside them. A parent sets up and controls the account. This page explains, plainly, what that requires, who else ever sees it, and how to have it deleted. If any part here is unclear, email us and ask. We would rather explain it than have you guess.
The short version
A parent creates the account. Your child does not sign in and has no email with us. We collect the small profile you type in (your child's first name, grade, and a couple of things they love), the work your child does in each mission, and the chapters those missions become. What your child makes belongs to your child: we do not train any model on their words, their drawings or their pages, and we have given no provider permission to. The maths itself is still checked by our own engine, not by a model. Some parts of a mission do use AI, and the section below says exactly which and exactly what is sent. We never sell your data, we run no advertising, and we place no tracking on you or your child. You can ask us to delete your family's data at any time.
Who runs the account
Nell & Key is made for children in grades 1 to 7, but the account belongs to a parent or guardian. You sign in with an email and password, or with Google, through Google Firebase. Your child has no separate login, no password, and no email address with us. You type in a short profile so the first mission can be built around your child, and you can read every chapter your child makes.
What we collect

Your child's words and voice
A mission keeps what your child says, as they said it. That is the point of it: their reasons for a colour, what they think will happen before they test it, who their page is for. Those words go into their own book, and their tutor reads them. The maths in a mission is still checked by our own engine, in the browser, not by a model.
Speaking is always optional and there is always a text box instead. The microphone is off until your child turns it on, and it is live only while they hold the button, never in the background. We do not store any recording of your child's voice. The few seconds they held are sent once, as one request, to a speech service that turns them into words, and the recording is gone when that request ends. Your child then reads the words back and confirms them before anything uses them. The companions' own voices, Luz and Pip and Rook and Bolt, are recordings we made ahead of time and ship with the site, or are made by a speech service from lines we wrote.
AI, disclosed plainly
Some of Nell & Key uses AI and some of it deliberately does not. Where a wrong answer would matter, a model is not the thing deciding.
What a model never does
It never marks your child's work. The maths, the Spanish word, the wiring: each is checked by our own engine against a right answer we wrote. It never decides what your child is ready for next. And it is never given your child's record to train on.
What a model does do
- Writes the next day, for a person to approve. A tutor says what tomorrow should be about and a model drafts that day. What it is told is your child's first name, their grade, and the things they love, and nothing else of your family. A tutor reads it and publishes it by hand; nothing a model writes reaches your child unread.
- Answers when your child asks. If they ask the helper inside a mission a question, that question, and the part of the mission they are on, go to a model to answer. Not their profile, not their record, not your account.
- Turns held speech into words, as described above.
- Reads a line aloud in a companion's voice.
The providers we send those to are OpenAI, Anthropic and Google for the words, and ElevenLabs and Microsoft Azure for the voice. Each is sent only what that one reply needs. We have given none of them permission to train on it, and we do not train on it ourselves. If that ever changes, it will change by asking you first, in plain words, and a no will cost you nothing.
Who else sees your data
We use a small number of providers to run Nell & Key. Each sees only what it needs:
- Google Firebase: sign-in, and where your account and your child's chapters and work are stored.
- Vercel: hosts this site and the server behind it, so it carries the requests your browser makes.
- OpenAI, Anthropic and Google: the models described above, each sent only the text for that one reply.
- Microsoft Azure: turning a few held seconds of your child's speech into words. Your child's voice is never sent to ElevenLabs. The recording is not kept by us.
- ElevenLabs and Microsoft Azure: reading a companion's line aloud.
- Stripe: if you take a membership, Stripe's own page takes the card. We never receive your card number.
- Resend: if you write to us or ask about a membership, this email service delivers your message to our team.
We do not sell your data to anyone, for any reason. We run no advertising, we place no analytics or tracking scripts, and we do not share your data with data brokers or ad networks.
Payments
Missions open without a card. A membership adds tutor hours, and nothing is charged until we have agreed those hours with you; the form on this site takes no payment at all. When you do pay, it happens on Stripe's own page. We never receive your card number, and no part of your child's profile or work is ever sent to a payment provider. Tell us you want to stop and we stop.
Children
Nell & Key is meant for children, in grades 1 to 7, and we have built it that way on purpose. A parent or guardian creates and controls the account; the child does not sign in, give an email, or set up anything themselves. We collect only the short profile the parent enters and the math the child works through, and we keep both to a minimum. We never use a child's information to advertise to them, we never sell it, and we never build an advertising profile. If you are a parent and want to see, correct, or delete what we have for your child, email us and we will take care of it.
Deleting your data
Email info@nellandkey.com from your account's email address and we will delete your account, your child's profile, and the saved chapters, and confirm once it is done. We keep your child's saved chapters so you can return to them, so they are removed when you ask us, not on their own. You can also download your child's chapters as a PDF from the book at any time; that download is made on your device.
Security
Your data travels over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and who can read it is enforced by rules on our server, not only by the app, so one family's data is not reachable from another's account even if the app were tricked into asking. No system is perfectly secure, but we treat this seriously and keep tightening it.
Changes to this policy
If this changes in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top, and for anything important we will tell you directly rather than relying on you finding this page again.
